Timberland boots have long been a shoewear staple in hip-hop culture so for the shoe brand’s newest collection, The Legend Club, it was a fitting choice to select rap icon Nas to front the fall 2017 campaign. For the first installment of Timberland’s fall collection, the brand unveiled a short video where Nas transforms into a cartoon character to discuss his rise from the streets of Queens to becoming a rap legend and Timberland’s influence on his hometown New York.
“New York is a very stylish place; we don’t anything the regular way, we don’t do things to fit in,” Nas says in the clip. The rapper takes viewers through his neighborhood in Queens, as he reminisces about how influential the iconic boot was to him growing up. “Timberland is a household name, especially where I’m from. We used to go to Steinway Street in Queens — I used to put them on layaway, I used to do whatever to make sure no one else bought that size.”
In partnership with Foot Locker, Nas’ animated videos will accompany each boot released in the four-part Legend collection range, which will be released each month starting in September. The first boot in the collection is the Volume VII FlyRoam, set to be released on Sept. 30.
Clocking in over 20 years in the rap game, Nas has experienced hip-hop’s evolution first-hand. “Hip-hop is constantly evolving because it’s the language of the youth,” he continued. “All the things that matter are still there, it’s the glue, and it’s just the new generation comes and tells their story.”
The Volume VII Flyroam Sport Hiker will be available for purchase on Sept. 30 at Foot Locker retail stores.
