Moxie Raia’s new single might be called “Cold Outside,” but the singer is turning up the heat with the release of the song’s music video, premiering on Billboard today (Oct.11).
In “Cold Outside,” Raia reminisces on a past relationship she’s not quite ready to let go of yet. With her soulful vocals, she invites her ex-lover to “shed a tear” for their love, while fantasizing about ways they can still be together.
The 28-year-old R&B singer, who opened for Justin Bieber on his Purpose World Tour in 2016, released her first album 931 Reloaded that same year, which featured artists like Pusha T, Post Malone and Wyclef Jean. Her collaboration with Steve Aoki, “I Love It When You Cry,” spent 20 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart.
Now that she has a couple of years of making and releasing music under her belt, Raia understands how deeply connected she is to the music she makes.
“Even if it’s a happy song, it has roots in something raw and real,” Raia says. “When I’m making music, I need to get that indescribable feeling or I’m not interested.”
She wrote “Cold Outside” after meeting with a past love at a diner in LA, which sparked some indescribable feelings — just not happy ones. “The conversation was pretty superficial, which was weird since we used to be so close,” she recalls. “‘Cold Outside’ is about all the things a part of me wanted to say that night but didn’t.”
In the video for the sultry track, Raia aimlessly drifts through New York City, stopping in a mini mart to buy snacks, even dying her hair blue. Despite all of her distractions, she can’t get her lost love out of her head. But even with the song’s not-so-happy inspiration, Raia still found a way to make heartbreak sexy.
