Migos have been on undoubtedly the best run of their still-young career in 2017, with “Bad and Boujee” feat. Lil Uzi Vert rising to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Jan. 9 and their sophomore album, Culture, debuting atop the Billboard 200 after its Jan. 27 release. So it’s fitting that the trio of Quavo, Offset and Takeoff took the stage for one of the more highly anticipated performances at the 2017 BET Awards.
Opening with Quavo and Post Malone performing their collaboration “Congratulations,” which is currently at No. 9 on the Hot 100 (a new peak), the performance started with Post on the stage alone wearing all black with a Stone Cold Steve Austin-inspired leather jacket before Quavo made his entrance for his verse (preceded by his unmistakable ad-libs), with ski goggles atop his head.
Offset and Takeoff then joined Quavo on the stage as the first strains of “T-Shirt” could be heard, and all of a sudden, Quavo’s goggles made sense; with a set inspired by their instantly iconic video for the song, all three wore big, puffy jackets to play up the trapper theme.
Then, as soon as “Bad and Boujee” began, the whole crowd erupted in jubilation, joining the Migos in the song’s understated yet endlessly memeable hook. The songs are the two biggest singles of the trio’s career to date (“T-Shirt” peaked at No. 19 on the Hot 100 in February).
Migos are nominated for three awards at tonight’s gala, including best group — which they already won earlier in the show — as well as best collaboration and video of the year, though the latter is for “Bad and Boujee” and not the aforementioned “T-Shirt.”
