Meyhem Lauren and DJ Muggs fed the streets with the release of their new collaborative project, Gems From The Equinox, boasting features from a string of celebrated wordsmiths rapping toe-to-toe with Lauren over Mugg’s hardcore production. On Wednesday (Nov. 8), the duo doles out the new video for “Aquatic Violence” and tag Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire and the late Sean Price for the gritty street anthem.
The visual begins with a vintage footage reel showing New York’s signature graffiti walls and a mural of Sean P. Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire leads the charge and delivers his verse in Times Square as he raps, “Touch your hand on his head and you a dead man/ Might pop up on your block shooting Megatron.”
Meyhem follows suit and kicks off his verse with a boastful one-liner: “There’s some new kings in town, say peace to the throne.” Footage of Meyhem taking photos with rap veterans Smif-N-Wesson and Large Professor are spliced in the visual and the Bronx rapper finishes off his verse just as confident as he started. “Broke through the struggle, kept the rubble as a souvenir,” he raps.”
“Sean P was my man,” Lauren tells Billboard. “I was at his house the night of his wedding. He was still alive when we did this song and at the time he told me to hit him up if we ever do a video for it. But when it came time to do the video, he had already passed. So I hit his wife Bernadette to see if she or his daughter would want to be in it and they were down.”
For Muggs, he compares “Aquatic Violence” to a popular Tom Cruise flick. “Aquatic Violence” is a deep sea Mission Impossible with a trip through Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan with a guest appearance that was recorded 2 years ago by the God Sean P,” says Muggs.
