On last week’s edition of Emerging Hip-Hop/R&B, we explored the success of Joji’s “Sanctuary” and Ali Gatie’s “It’s You.” Before we march into the Fourth of July weekend, we touch on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Cash Shit” and Y2K and bbno$’s “Lalala.”
Megan Thee Stallion Earns Second Hot 100 Single With “Cash Shit”
After watching “Big Ole Freak” gain traction earlier this year, this week Megan Thee Stallion’s “Cash Shit” featuring DaBaby becomes her second record to land on the Hot 100 chart. Debuting at No. 98, the Fever standout showcases the seamless chemistry between rap’s most explosive rookies. Both Megan and DaBaby stomp through the trap-heavy record with reckless abandon, boasting about their love for the money.
“Cash shit JUST DEBUTED ON BILLBOARD,” wrote Megan on Instagram earlier this wek. “This is my second billboard hot100 entry hotties ! Signed to an independent label, no crazy ass promo, no stunts just me being me! I just want to thank y’ all for supporting me and I promise to keep putting on and growing and getting better.”
Y2K & bbno$’s “Lalala” Debuts on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart
Before the release of “Lalala,” producer Y2K and Canadian rapper bbno$ sent various blogs, including Lyrical Lemonade and Elevator, phony origin stories about how the two met and created their catchy song. The idea certainly provoked anticipation and helped “Lalala” earn 5 million views on YouTube since its June release.
Bbno$’s outlandish delivery shines over the Latin-tinged record with rhymes like, “Married to the grind, I brought my ring/ I’m corny but your girly want the dick.” The fun-filled tune debuts at No. 41 this week on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Bbno$ is coming off his latest release Recess. The 11-track project dropped in January and also featured production from Y2K on “thankful” and “stucco.”
