After hearing about Demi Lovato’s hospitalization due to an alleged overdose, Macklemore took some time out of his set on Tuesday night in Mansfield, Mass., to send heartwarming words Demi’s way and even dedicate a performance of his 2009 song “Otherside” to Lovato. The Seattle native is currently finishing up the North American leg of The Adventures of Kesha and Macklemore Tour.
“I do that song because if it wasn’t for my sobriety and my recovery, I wouldn’t be on this stage here tonight,” he said following his performance. “And I just want to send prayers and my thoughts and love out to Demi Lovato. I heard about that, and when we have this disease of addiction, that ties us addicts together and that’s my sister in recovery.”
Macklemore also touched on his own struggles with addiction; he’s now a decade into his sobriety journey. “I know what it’s like to slip. I know what it’s like to relapse. I’ve done it many, many times. That song is dedicated to her and anyone else going through it right now,” he said.
Lovato was reportedly discovered unconscious at her Hollywood home on Tuesday. She is currently “awake and with her family,” a rep for the singer told Billboard. There has been an outpouring of support in the music community for the 25-year-old pop star.
