J.Cole is an engima, a typically reticent figure when compared to rap music’s more in-your-face frontrunners. So it’s a call for celebration when an artist receives a feature from Cole, or in Logic‘s case, a voicemail recording that almost brought the “1-800-273-8255” rapper to tears.
On Thursday (May 18), Logic spoke with Hard Knock TV and uncovered the moving story behind how he received the J.Cole recording.
‘”I’m the product of the kid you were telling to go be a rap star, be whatever he wanted to be and I did it,” Logic said he explained to Cole, after the rapper declined a feature for “Take It Back,” but agreed to lay a verse down for the album. “You are my Hov, you are my Jay Z. I waited outside for you. You’re the only rap concert I’ve ever been to.”
Due to his busy schedule, J.Cole sent a voice recording of the verse he agreed to contribute to Logic, almost moving Logic to tears. After asking permission to use the recording on one of the album’s cuts, Logic included Cole’s “Acceptance” verse at the end of “AfricAryan,” from his recently released Everybody.
“I almost cried,” he continued. “This is my idol accepting me.”
Logic’s Everybody earned the rapper his first Billboard 200 album, selling 247,000 units in its first week. The album boasts features from Killer Mike, Juicy J, Alessia Cara and Khalid and many more.
