Lin-Manuel Miranda came to The Tonight Show to play on Tuesday night (June 18). The Hamilton creator was happy to throw down in a game of “Wheel of Freestyle,” but he also had some very exciting news to share about his upcoming third trip to Broadway with the show that kind of started it all.

“Before Hamilton, before In the Heights, my first time performing in New York was with a freestyle hip-hop group called Freestyle Love Supreme,” Miranda told host Jimmy Fallon. “We are coming to Broadway this fall at the Booth Theater. It’s an entirely made up Broadway show. You don’t know who’s going to show up. [The Roots’] Black Thought might show up. I might show up one night. You don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Miranda’s hip-hip improv group, Freestyle Love Supreme, will star in a show of the same name opening at the Booth in September with an rotating cast of unannounced players at each performance. The group, founded by Miranda, Anthony Veneziale and Thomas Kali, was formed in 2004, with a recent reboot playing off-Broadway earlier this year.
Previews of the show, directed by Kali, will start on Sept. 13, with opening night slated for Oct. 2. Current plans call for a 16-week run, wrapping in Jan. 2020; pre-sale tickets will be available for American Express cardholders on June 21, with general public tickets going on sale on July 9.
The theater nerd/rapper also faced off against The Roots’ Tarik Trotter in “Wheel of Freestyle,” somehow managing to build a freestyle from the words flip-flops, seared salmon and prescription sunglasses. Spoiler alert: he killed it with a BluBlockers shout-out. Trotter had an equally hard lyrical hill to climb with loofah, Netflix password and Daenerys Targaryen, but, of course, one of the greatest freestylers alive burned it down like it was nothing.
