Lil Nas X is a man of his word. After promising students a free show, the 20-year-old pulled up to Lander Elementary School in Mayfield Heights, Ohio on Wednesday afternoon (May 29) for a surprise performance of his “Old Town Road” yeehaw anthem, which just notched its eighth week atop the Hot 100.
“I’m finna do the biggest show of my life and it’s going to be great,” Nas X told Complex just prior to hitting the makeshift stage in the school’s gymnasium. Once the kids recognized their hero in the flesh, absolute bedlam erupted.
Still rocking his signature cowboy hat, boots, and denim attire, students joined Lil Nas in belting out the unedited lyrics of the Atlanta native’s smash that has taken the country by storm. “SAW THESE KIDS TURNIN UP TO OLD TOWN ROAD 5 DAYS AGO AND HAD TO COME THRU AND PERFORM ONE TIME. LOVE THESE MOMENTS,” Nas X wrote to IG after the pop-up show.
The priceless moment stemmed from Lil Nas getting wind of a viral clip posted by the school’s principal, Felecia Evans, showing the students ending their 5th grade talent show with a collective performance of “Old Town Road.” “I love my job. We ended our 5th grade talent show today with the whole school dancing and celebrating…together,” she wrote to Twitter.
Meanwhile, the influence of “Old Town Road” has even seeped into Hollywood, as the record is featured in the new trailer for Rambo: Last Blood starring Sylvester Stallone. Look for the latest addition to the Rambo series to hit theaters nationally in September.
