As Lil Nas X continues to trounce the competition with his Hot 100 chart-topping single “Old Town Road,” on Wednesday (April 24), the young hyphenate contemplated changing his stage name out of respect for Nas.
“Nas is a legend and i never meant any disrespect by my stage name,” he explained on Twitter. “I actually might change it in the future.”
Actor Michael Rapaport replied to offer X a slew of replacement names, such as Kareem Abdul Jabbar X or Robert DeNiro X. “How about Kareem Abdul Jabbar X? Or maybe Rober DeNiro X? “Those are original right?” he quipped.
Despite X’s recent success, his viral record has also been met with criticism. Last week, Harlem MC Dave East dubbed “Old Town Road” a “wack” record. In response to his comment, X shrugged off East’s criticism during an interview with Zach Sang on Monday (April 22). “I have the No. 1 song in the country,” he offered. “I do not give a fuck about what Dave East is saying.”
