Emerging West London rapper AJ Tracey — he’s followed by Drake on Instagram! — dropped a new single titled “Quarterback” late Monday night (Oct. 2) on Julie Adenuga’s Beats 1 radio show.
“Quarterback” is produced by Nyge and Keanu Beats, who is responsible for producing Migos’ Culture highlight “What The Price.” The single is also picked from Tracey’s forthcoming EP Secure The Bag!, which is due on Friday, Oct. 6 and features one of Britain’s most prominent veteran pop stars, Craig David.
“Basically this track was inspired by the Super Bowl game recently,” Tracey tells Billboard about “Quarterback,” referencing Super Bowl LI this February between Atlanta and New England. “I was in a hotel in Glasgow and saw how Tom Brady was calling all the shots. I basically related to him in that sense. I feel like Brady in the music scene!
“I started writing the hook. I got the beat from my boy Keanu who worked on Migos’ ‘What The Price,’ and got my brother Nyge to touch it up. Came out hard as hell — the growling bass is ridiculous! I started using the first half of the track at my live shows to come out to and it was going crazy. Fans knew the lyrics and the track hadn’t even dropped yet. Shit was wild.”
Tracey will appear with Adenuga on Beats every evening this week.
