A Tribe Called Quest fans are about to get a gift they never expected. L.A. Reid told the Rap Radar podcast that the pioneering group recorded a final album before Phife Dawg‘s death earlier this year. “We have a Tribe Called Quest album coming. I’m really excited about that,” the Epic Records CEO said on the podcast (around the 14:45 mark). “A brand new album they recorded before Phife passed away.”
Reid said the album was recorded earlier this year and features the full lineup Q Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White. “I’m really happy about it man, it’s really something special. It’s one of the things I’m most excited about over everything we’re working on,” Reid said. The as-yet-untitled album would be the first from the group since 1998’s the Love Movement and the first to feature White since 1990’s People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.
Reid said Tribe’s first album in 18 years is “great” and “it’s coming soon.” A spokesperson for Epic could not be reached for further comment at press time.
