After opening up about his battle with bipolar disorder fueling his summer 2018 Ye album, Kanye West backtracked on his statements when visiting with President Trump at the White House months later, saying he was “misdiagnosed” and actually dealing with severe sleep deprivation. Kim Kardashian gets candid regarding the conversation surrounding her husband’s mental health in a new profile with Vogue, out Wednesday (April 10).
Following contrasting assessments from docs, Kardashian says Kanye has once again accepted the realization of his bipolar diagnosis. “I think we’re in a pretty good place with it now,” she said. “It is an emotional process, for sure. Right now, everything is really calm. But we can definitely feel episodes coming, and we know how to handle them.”
Kim also mentions that Yeezy wants to be a trailblazer in being a public figure living a normal life with mental illness while not relying on medication. “For him, being on medication is not really an option, because it just changes who he is,” Kardashian said of her husband. “Traveling a lot does set it off, so he doesn’t travel as much as he used to. But honestly, I never want to speak for him, because I am not in his mind.”
The reality star-turned-mogul explains that she will always be supportive of West but will let him know when she feels he’s stepping out of line by going off on certain tangents.
“I think some of the hurtful things that I read online, ‘What is she doing? She’s not stopping him.’ Like it’s my fault if he does or says something that they don’t agree with? That’s my husband,” said Kardashian. “I share every opinion that I have and let him know when I think something’s wrong. Or if it comes to him being in the middle of a bipolar episode, I’ll do everything to be supportive and help to calm the situation.”
