Killer Mike always has a lot on his mind. And now, the Run the Jewels rapper and social activist is about to have an even bigger bullhorn thanks to Netflix. Mike debuted the trailer for his upcoming six-episode series, Trigger Warning — which drops on Jan. 18 — on Wednesday (Dec. 12), with a provocative one-minute look at his attempts to take on everything from religion to gang culture and economic inequality.
But, you know, in a totally Killer Mike way. So that means we see him telling an Asian stripper that he can’t tip her because he’s only spending money in the black community that week, asking the Crips gang why they don’t have their own branded soda, wondering why he can’t have a black Jesus and listening incredulously to a white woman tell him that “most of the shootings and robberies are done by blacks.”
“Trigger Warning is about examining cultural taboos and giving viewers the space to examine the ‘what ifs’ and ‘why nots’ that limit how some people move and operate in the world,” Mike explained in a statement. “In six episodes, we explore the human condition using nontraditional approaches. Not everyone will agree with my methods (and some of what we’re putting out is fucking crazy), but this show is about embracing your freedom to challenge societal expectations and conformity. This show is if an anarchist determined the status quo.”
The streaming service describes the show as a “subversive comedy documentary series” in which Mike “and a team of funny correspondents explore socially relevant topics.” Mike summed up his excitement in a tweet, where he wrote, “I can’t believe they let us make this show. Coming Jan 18th 2019 on @netflix to fuck shit up!”
