Apple Music continues to shine the spotlight on rising talent with its Up Next program. Following in the steps of 6lack and Sigrid is “Location” hitmaker Khalid. As part of the program, the 19-year-old R&B singer will be releasing a documentary, sitting down with Beats 1’s Ebro Darden and delivering a live performance on The Late Late Show with James Corden.
To kickstart the Khalid party, Apple Music took it back to the R&B singer’s Texas beginnings that inspired his debut American Teen. “This is what it feels like to be an American teen, to be an African-American teen, to be an ‘awkward’ teen in high school, to be an uncool teen in high school,” he says in the doc, which features footage of his a cappella performances at Americas High School in El Paso.
In the trailer, he also reflects on how he began penning his own music. “I’m in this trance within everything, with the melodies that travel in the wind, and after I write a song, I look back like ‘How did I write that?'”
