On the heels of releasing his anticipated Luca Brasi 3 album, Kevin Gates opened up in a rare interview with Sway Calloway. Part one of the conversation was released on Monday, as the Baton Rouge, La., rapper dished on family life, retaining his freedom, pleading guilty while innocent, and even received a call from his daughter.
Gates was released from jail back in January after serving nine months of a 30-month sentence on a gun possession charge. Kevin admitted to pleading guilty because of the leniency he noticed with his case from the Florida legal system, resulting in a lesser overall charge. “I was innocent, but I pled guilty to that charge because, you know, a lot of times you can beat the charge, but you can’t beat the ride,” he eloquently explained. “I probably would have sat another three or four years just fighting the charge.”
The Bread Winners’ Association co-founder is appreciative of his time spent behind bars at the East Moline Correctional Center, where he was transferred in the midst of his sentence, because of the newfound structure it brought to his life. “The different thing about Gangland — and when I say that, Illinois — it was so beautiful because it was structured different. I’ve never been around that type of structure. And it was beautiful,” he said.
In the meantime, the 32-year-old also kicks off his Luca Brasi 3 Tour in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday night (Oct. 2). Gates will trek through much of the United States to close out 2018. Find tickets to the tour on his official website.
