Kendrick Lamar has been rocking stages with previously unheard verses on the late night TV circuit. In Dec. 2014, he debuted an untitled track as the final musical guest on The Colbert Report before performing more unreleased material on the Jan. 7 episode of The Tonight Show.
For his powerful Grammy performance of “The Blacker The Berry” and “Alright” on Monday night (Feb. 15), the Compton MC brought to the stage a third untitled freestyle. In a recent interview with 2 Dope Boyz — an extension of his Grammy.com feature — Lamar revealed that has a wealth of outtakes that didn’t land on the Grammy-winning LP To Pimp a Butterfly.
“You see all these performances on these late night shows,” said Kendrick. “I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album. But I think probably close to 10 songs that I’m in love with that I’ll still play and still perform that didn’t make the cut.”
After the Grammys, Lamar took home five trophies including best rap album, best rap performance and best rap song for “Alright,” best rap/sung performance for “These Walls” and best music video for his “Bad Blood” collaboration with Taylor Swift.
