It’s no secret that one of Kendrick Lamar’s biggest influences is fellow Compton native Dr. Dre. While the duo teamed up a few times before, a full-length collaborative effort from the two has yet to materialize. But that all changed on Tuesday (April 3), when DJ Critical Hype unleashed a mashup project titled The DAMN. Chronic.
The DAMN. Chronic combines Lamar’s slick, acrobatic flow, including a few cuts from his latest album, DAMN., with the masterful production skills Dr. Dre produced on his debut album The Chronic to create the perfect blend of old school and new school hip-hop and the joint project we always wanted.
Standouts include Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe,” which is reworked to match Dre’s menacing “Forgot About Dre” instrumental, or DJ Critical Hype using Lamar’s Compton State of Mind track “Kendrick Lamar” over Dre’s “My Name Is” production.
“Kendrick has so many flows, voices, and styles, plus Dre beats are really incredible, so I figured it would be dope,” Hype told Pigeons and Planes. However, he added that the mixing process wasn’t easy since “Dre doesn’t have many slower beats.” But he’s happy with the end result.
DJ Critical Hype is no amateur when it comes to creating mashup mixtapes. In 2016, he blessed fans of Chance the Rapper and Kanye West with Chance the Dropout, layering Chance’s vocals over West’s beats.
