Kelechi first started gaining blog buzz with the release of his debut project, The Loose Change(s) EP, in December 2014. But the Georgia native, 24, also caught the ear of Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound with the EP’s single “Want,” winning its Open Call contest in March 2015 and netting $50,000 toward an album, a free trip to perform at its SXSW showcase and a music video shot and produced by Green Label.
Now that album, Before the Quarter, is finally out this Friday, and to get fans ready Kelechi drops off his latest single “The Glo,” featuring BJ the Chicago Kid.
The uplifting, almost gospel-tinged track is produced by Peter Cottontale and Nate Fox — better known as members of the Chance the Rapper-affiliated collective The Social Experiment — and recalls a similar vibe to Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment’s 2015 free album Surf. But Kelechi’s distinctive vocals and delivery are all his own, ending any further sonic comparisons with the Chicago MC.
Before the Quarter is Kelechi’s first full-length project, and he’s not just content to rap over other people’s beats; the singer/rapper hybrid also is a producer, and worked behind the boards on six of the project’s 10 tracks. Check out “The Glo” above, the project’s first single “Reachin'” featuring Trinidad Jame$ right here, and keep an eye out for the album’s arrival via Green Label Sound this Friday.
