“When I was younger, I always felt like I had to separate [singing and acting],” she told Billboard backstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.
“But I spent a lot of time working with R. Kelly and one thing that he told me, he was like, ‘Keke, you don’t need to shy away from your acting,” Palmer continued. “You bring that to a part of your music. You make that take your music to the next level.’”
Palmer revealed that Kelly’s advice inspired a shift in the direction of her new music, which she describes as R&B, hip-hop and soul. “I’m really talking about my life personally,” she said of her new project, explaining that she used to shy away from discussing the other parts of her career in her music.
In the interview, which you can watch above, Keke Palmer also talks about her upcoming appearance in season two of Fox’s Star and working with Queen Latifah.
