On the heels of saying he would be distancing himself from politics, Kanye West has made another donation to Chicago mayoral candidate Amara Enyia. Illinois State Board of Elections public records show that Yeezy poured another $126,540 into the Friends of Amara Enyia political action committee on Wednesday, bringing his grand total of donations to an even $200,000.
Enyia’s campaign spokeswoman Kristi Kucera confirmed West’s donation and released a statement about the contribution. “Kanye has an interest in investing in Chicago, his hometown, and is welcome to act on those interests at any time. We think it is valuable that he is able to focus his efforts on his creative work and on supporting the platform that he believes will help move our city in the right direction,” she wrote.
Kucera added that the 41-year-old’s affiliation to the campaign is only as a supporter of the movement. “Kanye has never been involved with our campaign other than as a supporter,” she stated. “His interest in the mayoral race is about problems and results, and has nothing to do with partisan politics.”
West’s support follows in the footsteps of Chance the Rapper‘s public endorsement of Amara Enyia. The political candidate used Yeezy’s original $73,540 gift to settle previous debts she had with the state of Illinois, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
