On Sunday night (Oct. 22), fans on social media voiced their displeasure after it was announced that Justin Timberlake will perform at the 2018 Super Bowl halftime show. After being embroiled in Janet Jackson’s infamous “Nipplegate” scandal in 2004, Timberlake will make his first return to the Super Bowl stage after 14 years. Timberlake’s inclusion earned a mixed reception, with avid Jackson supporters demanding an explanation for her noninvolvement.
“Unless Justin Timberlake starts his set by introducing Janet Jackson with an apology and then continues watching quietly while she does 12 minutes of her catalog solo, the Super Bowl can keep this halftime show,” wrote @RafiDAngelo. “If Janet Jackson can’t ever perform at the Super Bowl again then Justin Timberlake shouldn’t be able to either,” said @Pic_Nikk.
The risqué 2004 performance caused shock waves after Timberlake inadvertently pulled a piece of clothing off Jackson’s top, exposing her breast, which has adorned by a nipple pastie. Complaints caused Jackson to allegedly be banished by the NFL entirely — though recent reports have refuted her banning — and led to her exclusion at the 2004 Grammy Awards. As for Timberlake, he managed to walk away unscathed by the incident, and was allowed to attend the Grammys.

Nothing changes. Justin Timberlake gropes Janet Jackson during Super Bowl halftime show. He’s booked to headline again, she isn’t. pic.twitter.com/ZLKh2Xs4Yp
