Jidenna goes from classic man to chief in his powerful new visual for “Chief Don’t Run.” Clad in his signature three-piece suit, the Wondaland Records rapper beats his chest while delivering vivid anecdotes. In the Alan Ferguson-directed visual, he motions to photos of a single mom and a young boy, recalling nights of sleeping by the oven for warmth and staying at motels filled with hookers.
The leader of the #Jenerals then roars to life by clinking glasses to his accomplishments — on a yacht with a prince in Dubai, hanging with the Dalai Lama’s crew at the airport, he raps — while staying humble like his beginnings. He also embeds a political message in the video, playing both cop and arrestee, spitting, “I live a different set of laws out here/ Know my rights even when I’m in the wrong out here/ Look what we did with one song out here/ Like a locksmith opened every door out here.”
“Chief Don’t Run” follows Jidenna’s previous releases “Long Live the Chief” and “Classic Man.” The latter peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.
