Jhene Aiko sounds as smooth as ever on the rough cut of her latest offering “New Balance,” an intimate, piano-laced track she posted on her Soundcloud on Sunday (Aug 14).
Before she dropped the song, Aiko posted a Tumblr link to Twitter that shared lyrics to the track. Shortly after, her TWENTY88 collaborator Big Sean encouraged her to release the song. “you should just drop this song!,” tweeted Sean.

On “New Balance,” the Def Jam songstress sings about unexpectedly falling in love with someone and fearing judgment from other people. “It hit me like a tidal wave/Knew that I was in love with you right away, yeah/Turned all my days into brighter days,” she croons. “Even when people say what we do is not okay/According to what the people say, yeah/Who cares what other people say?/Man f–k what other people say.”
“New Balance” arrives days after reports that Aiko had ended her 11-month marriage to producer Dot Da Genius.
