When security footage emerged Monday morning showing a tenacious Solange Knowles wailing on her brother-in-law, Jay Z, in a hotel elevator, it spawned a blast of creativity from would-be comedians (and actual ones) in the media. “I see Solange was trying to kickstart her career,” went one typical punchline on Twitter. On “Late Night,” Seth Meyers said the emergence of the video “brings Jay Z’s total to 100 problems.”
The early break of the story also meant that New York City’s snarkiest newspapers had an entire day to dig through hundreds of possible puns and turns-of-phrase to splash across their front pages on Tuesday. Instead, rivals The New York Post and New York Daily News chose near-identical photos (face-palming Jay) with both choosing CRAY-Z for their big headlines.
