Last month, David Letterman made a huge splash when he enlisted former president Barack Obama as the inaugural guest for the premiere of his Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. After successfully nabbing George Clooney and Malala Yousafzai as follow-up guests, Letterman recruited JAY-Z as his latest interviewee for his fourth episode.
In a new clip released by Netflix, the conversation behind Hov and Letterman includes Jay’s thoughts on what makes Snoop Dogg and Eminem great rappers. “You can have a great voice and you can just almost say anything,” he says. “I think Snoop Dogg has a great voice. Like, he can say, ‘One, two, three, and to the four,’ and it’s like, ‘Oh my god.’ It just sounds good, right? It just sounds really good.”
Later, Jay opined that Eminem’s cadence is what makes him such a superior MC when he’s on the mic. “Or you can be someone like Eminem and just have amazing cadence.” After parsing Em’s intricate flow for the audience, he explained, “It’s percussion inside the music.”
In the past, Jay has collaborated with both Eminem and Snoop Dogg. First, he and the 8 Mile lyricist squared off on Jay’s track “Renegade” in 2001. As for Snoop, Jay was featured on the remix for his 2009 hit “I Wanna Rock.”
