West Coast star Jay Worthy and heavyweight producer The Alchemist have teamed up for a new collaborative project titled Fantasy Island. To get the ball rolling, they have crafted their jazzy single “Stepping Out” featuring Sha Hef.
With smoothness permeating all throughout the record, The Alchemist provides the perfect backdrop for Worthy to cruise and reminiscence. “All my n—-s looking rich/but we came from them times/didn’t have a pot to piss/now I pull up in that six,” raps Worthy.
For the Compton upstart, he never envisioned himself pairing up with mega-producer for an entire project. In an e-mail to Billboard, Worthy explains how the two first met.
“The collaboration with me and Alchemist came about when I was in Vancouver going to check out the homie Meyhem Lauren’s show. We were both in that city. He was playing with Action Bronson and AL was dj’ing,” recalls Worthy. “So, after the show, I’m backstage and Al approaches me and tells me he’s a fan and gave me props on my s–t. I was shocked to be honest that he knew who I was. I had asked him how he had heard of my music and he said Earl Sweatshirt had put him on to it and he was rockin’ with it. So, from there, we chopped it up. [We] met back in L.A. and got to work.”
For Worthy, he and Alchemist instantly forged a bond. “I feel like the whole project as a whole demonstrates the chemistry as we recorded the whole ep at Al’s,” says Worthy. “[We] really caught a vibe in there and mashed it out.”
On “Stepping Out,” the newly-assembled tandem exude flawless chemistry. “If I had to choose one record that demonstrates chemistry, it would have to be “Stepping Out or “Four Fifteens,” says Worthy. “I know Al’s favorite is “Stepping Out.” He originally had a verse on that joint maybe the world will here it one day!!”
Fantasy Island will drop June 2, featuring Rugotti, Conway, Meyhem Lauren, Ray Wright, and more.
