Fresh off the success of his Black Panther breakout hit “King’s Dead” featuring fellow TDE cohort Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake, Jay Rock is ready to ride solo.
Rock returned on Wednesday (May 16) with his new triumphant single “Win” and while he takes the lead on this one, his right-hand-man Kendrick, who ad-libs and is credited on the track as a co-writer, isn’t too far behind.
The artwork for Rock’s new single shows him seated on a lawn in front of a house, surrounded by several trophies gazing into the camera. “Win” begins with an anthemic opening and an infectious chorus with supporting adlibs from hypeman Kung Fu Kenny. Rock’s energetic flow glides over celebratory horns and skittering drums as he raps, “I ain’t chasin’ after no bitch/I got bigger plans, I’m stayin’ rich/I’ve been tapped in since I was six/I tap dance all on a brick.”
Back in April, TDE CEO Topdawg shared a photo of him in a marketing meeting with the camera focused on a laptop that shows Jay Rock holding up gang signs. “@jayrock marketing meeting…. New music and album coming soon… #TDE,” he captioned the photo, teasing that Rock’s album may arrive soon.
