Fresh off of his win for “King’s Dead” at the 2019 Grammy Awards, Jay Rock looks to keep the Redemption era magic flowing. The Watts MC returned Friday (Feb. 22) to unite his home state of California with “The Other Side.” The bouncy West Coast tune features gritty Sacramento native Mozzy and Long Beach R&B crooner DCMBR, who also teamed up around this time last year for the Spiritual Conversations cut “Nobody Knows.”
The TDE signee takes it back to his days of slinging drugs to get by as a teenager. “Making that cal fresh and cal word flip/ We set up shop, then sling knicks out our house/ If police hit ain’t shit coming out our mouths/ My day one n—as, yeah my n—as I’m thugging with/ Trey 8 specials, .44’s we slugging shit,” he rhymes.
Mozzy takes the torch and kicks a couple street tales of his own. “Body for body it’s really that gangster/ My bitches be trafficking off of backpages/ Quarter of a million that’s all rap baby/ Another quarter of a million that’s how the trap pay me/ The 5-0 circling double back later/ 10 piece of cookie in the duffle double that later,” the Beautiful Struggle artist raps.
Let’s see what else Jay Rock has in store to build off his banner 2018 campaign. During a Twitter Q&A earlier in February, the 33-year-old teased the possibility of having a completed joint project with Kendrick Lamar in the stash. “We Might Already Have A Full Project #TDE,” he hinted.
For now, give “The Other Side” a listen below.
