James Fauntleroy is the man behind the curtain. A sonic embodiment of soul, his voice is easy to fall in love with. A catalog boasting songwriting credits for and collaborators from Justin Timberlake to Beyonce and Frank Ocean, his creative repertoire is nothing short of phenomenal. Needless to say, Fauntleroy’s accomplishments are undeniably bountiful — and so was his last month on SoundCloud. In the past 30 days, the Inglewood-born artist blessed his listeners with fifteen new songs on his page.
It’s days like today — with not one, but two new releases — where Fauntleroy proves his magic-making capabilities when it comes to the music. Yet today’s “Cold Fire” and “Follow You” only begin to breach his thoughtful tracklist in recent weeks. Songs like “It’s Cold But That’s Love, Baby” glean insight on a vocal range that encompasses a story in itself. Lyrically simplistic, it grabs your heart with mood more so than mind. Like most of Fauntleroy’s body of work, “Sometimes You Need to Be The One To Think About You” sits with you and allows for a moment of introspection. “Who Are You” does the same, setting the stage with an intimate atmosphere and space to ponder. “I Never Know What She’s Doing” resonates like a warm anecdote while it anticipates what it will feel like to “fall in love again.”
Fauntleroy has a way of saying a lot with a little. There’s something about him that feels relatable, as his content’s vulnerable tendencies touch the nooks and crannies of relationships and self-discovery. Looking back on one month and 15 fresh songs, we can’t deny that Fauntleroy’s presence in the industry — however elusive — is uniquely divine.
