Jack Harlow has some big stages coming up, from his Saturday Night Live debut on March 27 to him and Quavo going up against 2 Chainz and Lil Baby for a star-studded two-on-two game of hoops for Bleacher Report’s Open Run this Saturday during All-Star Weekend. But on Wednesday, Harlow and his backing band went small, taking over a Los Angeles living room with vintage furniture and plenty of greenery for his Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.
Live instrumentation and backup singers grounded his performance, giving a more soulful sound to “Rendezvous,” “21C/Delta” and “Funny You See Here” from his debut album Thats What They All Say. It was funny to see him captured in crooked, dynamic camera angles resembling the fervent spirit of a rap music video shoot when the melodic tracks felt closer to ballads in the intimate setting.
“It’s been a long time since I had a chance to perform, and I’ve never done it like this. This is special,” he noted before crooning “one of the most honest songs” he’s ever written, “Same Guy,” and “Creme/ONCE MAY COMES.”
After checking in with his crew if they could vibe to just one more song, he whipped out his breakout hit “Whats Poppin,” which earned the rapper his first Grammy Award nomination this year for best rap performance, and put a twist on it that could hype up an entire arena of fans.
