J. Cole dropped off the first visual from his KOD album to rave reviews with “ATM” last week (April 20). Many music fans quickly pointed out Cole pulling inspiration straight out of a certain ’90s Hype Williams-directed music video we became accustomed to from Busta Rhymes. Bus-a-Bus complimented the Dreamville CEO on his timeless art, and Jermaine responded on Twitter today (April 27) after a lengthy fan Q&A thanking the New York legend.
“Flipmode is the greatest,” J. Cole wrote paying homage to his hip-hop compatriot. “Thank you for the inspiration big bro.” The appreciative note quoted Busta’s Instagram photo, in which he posted side-by-side of screenshots from the St. John’s graduate’s “ATM” next to the 45-year-old’s 1998 colorful “Gimme Some More” video. “Timeless Greatness…. [J. Cole] Salute,” he captioned.
Busta launched Flipmode Entertainment back in 1994 and later founded the production crew Flipmode Squad later in 1996. Both have since been renamed to an iteration of The Conglomerate. “Gimme Some More” served as the lead single from his acclaimed Extinction Level Event (Final World Front), which aided in Rhymes’ achieving mainstream success.
“ATM” looks to be receiving the biggest push to commercial success from Cole’s latest LP. The Deputy-produced record has appeared in the latest NBA playoffs commercial, as the official track of the post-season.
