The Dollar and a Dream tour has become a tradition of sorts for J. Cole. Each year, the Fayetteville rapper charges his fans a dollar per entry, attracting thousands to wait in line.
For the third go-round, the cameras follow Cole and his team as they deal with the stress of booking a venue and having Stans try to stick it out in the streets despite hostile cops and a torrential downpour.
“It’s not worth it ’cause we fucked up, we didn’t plan right,” Cole contemplates at one point. “I’ma take the blame but it’s really all of us in the sense that n—-s just did it the same ol’ way, n—-s didn’t up the ante, n—-s didn’t evolve. We’re literally doing it the same exact way we did it three years ago.”
On a lighter note, the show did go on, paying homage to his critically acclaimed 2010 mixtape Friday Night Lights. Wale and Kendrick Lamar pop up for impromptu performances while A$AP Ferg and Rihanna appeared backstage. The latter even put in her two cents about Cole’s performance — and his hair.
“Very deep but real, honest, vulnerable, confident — it was all of that,” says Rih, before offering Cole a hair maintenance tip.
