J. Cole has erased all previous Instagram posts, which in the music world can only mean one thing: A new project is imminent. The rapper confirmed as much by posting a photo announcing that a new single called “Middle Child” will drop Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.
The photo simply says his name and “Middle Child,” all capitalized, while his caption notes that the track is produced by Grammy Award-winning producer T-Minus, who provided the beat for “Kevin’s Heart” on Cole’s 2018 album KOD.
When Cole first announced on Monday night that “Middle Child” was coming, there was initial speculation as to whether the single was part of The Revenge of the Dreamers III, The Off Season or neither. That was put to rest when his manager Ibrahim Hamad tweeted, “Dreamville all 2019.”
The 33-year-old has wasted no time in feeding his fans new music after first tweeting on Jan. 16 that he had finished The Revenge of the Dreamers III recording sessions. On Jan. 12, he also expressed on Twitter that he “shed tears tonight writin a verse shit was beautiful.”
Was that verse part of “Middle Child” or one of the other “124 songs/ideas” to come out of the Dreamers sessions? There is no way to know yet, but Cole is letting everybody know with certainty that he’s not messing around when it comes to letting the world feel what he’s been up to.
