On June 27, BET will premiere its new scripted series Tales. Spearheaded by Murder Inc. founder Irv Gotti, Tales will not only dive into classic and current hip-hop songs, but provide eye-catching narratives based on the tracks’ lyrics.
Songs slated to appear on the forthcoming series include N.W.A‘s “F–k the Police,” The Notorious B.I.G.‘.s “I Got a Story to Tell,” Meek Mill‘s “Cold Hearted,” and Fetty Wap‘s “Trap Queen.” For the premiere, Tales will recreate N.W.A’s politically charged opus, which centers around a controversial police shooting of a little boy. For each episode, mini-movies will be created based on the lyrics scripted by some of rap’s biggest stars.
The scripted anthology series of “song stories” will also feature prominent stars, most notably Woody McClain and Keith Powers from BET’s New Edition Story, Boris Kodjoe, Jennifer Freeman, Elise Neal, MC Lyte, Lance Gross, Christian Robinson, Matthew Noszka, Chet Hanks, Clifton Powell and more.
With a handful of directors and screenwriters expected to take the reins on different episodes, the show’s creator and executive producer Irv Gotti will also showcase his directorial skills.
In an interview with Billboard last year, Gotti told fans what to expect from his upcoming series. “This isn’t no reality show s–t and not a video,” he said. “I’m going to tell a story like only I can tell a story, and involve the hip-hop culture, which is colorless. Visionary Ideas is DreamWorks times 100, which is a crazy statement as big as DreamWorks is. But that’s my goal.”
