UPDATE: iLoveMakonnen has released the following statement about his departure from OVO Sound: “I cannot thank OVO, 40, Oliver, Future & Mr. Morgan, enough for all that they have done for my career. No words can express how much I appreciate Drake for being a part of the success of Tuesday. I’m sure the haters will have something negative to say, but all in all my choice to be solely on Warner Bros Records was the right thing for me and for my best interest. Sorry there’s no beef to report, DRINK MORE WATER.”
iLoveMakonnen is no longer signed to OVO Sound, a source tells Billboard. In September 2014, the Atlanta rhymer was the latest addition to Drake‘s roster, especially after teaming with the label boss for his breakout smash “Club Goin Up On A Tuesday” off his 2014 self-titled debut EP.
Last March, the MC (real name Makonnen Sheran) spoke on his relationship with OVO in an interview with FADER. “It’s cool, they put out my music and stuff and we just keep it moving. Let them tell you their relationship with Makonnen,” he said. “I’m just an artist, being an artist, and there’s only so much that I can do.”
Makonnen has been grinding solo, following up his buzzy project with the iLoveMakonnen2 release as well as his Drink More Water 5 and Drink More Water 6 mixtapes released over the past year. Expect the “I Don’t Sell Molly No More” rapper to piece together a thirst-quenching set list for his upcoming tour with California rapper Lil B.
On Tuesday (April 19), the future tour mates also released their joint collaboration “Can’t Let It Go.” “THANK U EVERYONE AND U ARE ALL WELCOME! THANK YOU BASED GOD!,” wrote Makonnen on his SoundCloud account. “YOU ARE THE LEGEND I ASPIRE TO BE!THANK U FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE FOR HUMANITY! U ARE A TRUE SUPERSTAR IN HUMAN FORM SO GLAD TO CALL U MY FRIEND/ BROTHER,/MENTOR /INSPIRATION TO US ALL!!!!!! SO PROUD TO SHARE THIS TRACK WITH THE INTERNET!”
