Hip-hop star iLoveMakonnen is dead set on delivering content to his fans. Just last month, the 30-year-old star unveiled his pop-tinged new EP M3 to critical and fan acclaim. But he’s not stopping there.
On Friday (July 12), Makonnen released his brand-new single “Loser,” a hyped-up pop-rap track on which the star falls down a spiral of dark thoughts, constantly repeating the bad thoughts he finds circling his mind. “I’m a loser, and I have no friends/ That’s why I’m doing drugs again,” he sings on the song’s chorus.
The song comes as a part of Showtime’s new docuseries Shangri-La, which follows legendary producer Rick Rubin as he consults with a number of artists, helping them realize their full potential. Makonnen is one of those artists appearing in the series, where he plays “Loser” for Rubin. “I really enjoyed playing this track for Rick because it was like I could tell someone my deepest, darkest secrets,” he said in a statement. “And I wasn’t being judged for saying my truth.”
Along with unveiling his new track, Makonnen announced a small headlining tour set to take place this fall. Titled “The Loser Run,” Makonnen is set to play five dates in Portland, Ore., Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and Austin, Texas, this September. Tickets are on sale now.
