As heady summer days yield to autumn, cooling temperatures spur contemplation. Some warm-weather nights stick out in life’s whirlwind, buoyed by images and words we yearn to relive through more than hazy memories and ten-second Snapchat snippets.
This relatable longing lies at the heart of “Nights on Replay,” a new single from Hugh Augustine feat. The Internet‘s Syd with production by THE MOST ART — a LA/NYC production outfit comprised of A. Walker, Dez Jetson and Didas.
Much like the memorable nights it evokes, the song itself evolved through multiple scenes and spaces. TMA’s dreamy beat fittingly came together in a 4 a.m. after hours session fueled by sleepless inspiration and a sample sent by Chicago’s Ron B.
“Each track we compose is meant to transport the listener through a spectrum of experiences and moments,” says Jetson. “That’s how we look to build narratives through sound. The best stories told are descriptive enough for all humans to relate to.”
The beat found a natural narrative counterpart in L.A. MC Hugh Augustine, who arrives fresh off a high-profile feature on Isaiah Rashad‘s full-length debut The Sun’s Tirade via Top Dawg Entertainment.
“‘Nights on Replay’ is a lifestyle that we were able to capture in a song and visual,” explains Augustine. “It’s an expression of a surreal experience, a night that I want to last forever, something that happens often when you grow up in L.A. And the video shows that. This is the party I want to be at all night. I want to do this all night. That’s the shit.”
Syd provides a perfect smoky counterpoint to Augustine’s musing meanders, shining during the synth-backed breaks. Her languid lines like “night on replay” and “smoked out on the balcony” help lend the song its elusive, late-night feel.
“This was a fun project to be a part of because it shows how as we go through all of life’s motions, there are certain feelings from certain periods of times that you can’t ever forget and you never want to forget,” she adds.
The song received its visual accompaniment courtesy of Aplus Filmz, the VMA-nominated collective behind Schoolboy Q’s “Man of the Year” and “John Muir” videos and Rashad’s “Park” and “Free Lunch” cuts.
Director Fredo Tovar praised the “unique” warehouse set where he shot the video for “Nights on Replay,” noting “there’s a lot we can do with this aesthetic to capture the nostalgic vibe.”
