A toast of lemonade is in order for rap power couple Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir, who recently snagged an upcoming BET reality series. For the self-proclaimed Wopsters, the eight-episode series is just the latest chapter in their longtime relationship.
In celebration of their bad romance, here are a few highlights of Mane and Ka’oir’s love story, from prison letters to a splashy courtside proposal and everything in between.
How It All Started
In a February 2017 profile of Ka’oir for The Fader, she recounts exactly how she went from starring in Guwop’s music videos to being Mane’s main squeeze. While in jail in 2010, Ka’oir caught the rapper’s eye after he noticed her in XXL following her role in Timbaland’s “Say Something” video.
As Ka’oir tells it: “He called [his manager] Amina from jail, and he was like, ‘Who is Keyshia Ka’oir? I want to meet this girl.’ He was like, ‘I’m getting out soon, I need her for my next video, you have to find her!’” Later, Ka’oir got a call. “Amina was like, ‘I work with Gucci, he wants you to –’ and I’m like, ‘Whatever.’ Because I don’t even want to be around rappers. But Gucci kept asking, and eventually I agreed. When he got out of jail, they flew me to Atlanta right away to do the ‘911 Emergency’ video. That’s the day we met. He was in love with me on sight.”
Love Letters From Prison
Spending time in the clink is a decidedly unromantic affair, but not if you’re Gucci Mane. In December 2015, the rapper sent Ka’oir a love note fit for a street poet. “My beautiful bride I love you so much I can’t put into words,” he typed in an email. “I am so blessed to have such a loyal compatible soul mate, we are the real bonnie and clyde I adore you.”
The Wopsters kept their love alive despite Mane being behind bars, and it was Ka’oir who alerted fans that the rapper was finally released from prison last May. Filming herself kissing Mane’s hand, Ka’oir simply says in the clip, “I missed my baby so much!”
At one point, Mane’s life was in shambles as the embattled rapper was fighting both a drug addiction and gun charges. Upon his release from jail, the rapper turned his life around, kicking drugs and pursuing a cleaner lifestyle, including becoming a full-on cyclist.
East Atlanta Santa Comes to Town
Christmas is truly the most wonderful time of the year. As seen on social media, the East Atlanta Santa was extra generous for Mane’s first Christmas out of the slammer with a tall, shimmering tree, presents galore, and lots of holiday cheer (read: oxtail and fried chicken) to go around.
The rapper switched up his day job and recently dropped his independent movie The Spot. Starring Mane and Ka’oir alongside rapper Rocko, the flick was filmed in 2012 and is a low-budget crime caper that one YouTuber succinctly described as being “so bad it’s good.” Stream the full 47-minute film below.
Gucci pops the question
What better place to declare your love for someone than at an Atlanta Hawks game? That’s where Mane chose to propose to Ka’oir in November, five years after the two lovebirds first met. Once the stadium’s kiss cam showed the couple front and center, Gucci stood up and pulled out a rock as big as one of the basketballs on the court.
