Last week (June 22), Gucci Mane scored a huge win after he received songwriter of the year at the 31st annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards. During his torrid streak, Gucci rattled off several impressive verses, most notably on his track “Both” featuring Drake and Rae Sremmurd’s Hot 100 chart-topper “Black Beatles.”
On Monday night (June 25) at the 2018 NBA Awards, Gucci expressed his gratitude towards the ASCAP committee after winning his latest award.
“I didn’t aim to get that award,” he told Billboard. “I was just doing my thang and I was surprised when I got it, but I’m definitely grateful that I got it. I appreciate it.”
Known for his indomitable work ethic in the studio, Gucci is currently plotting several new projects, including his solo effort Evil Genius and his all-star collaborative tape Glacier Boyz with Migos and Lil Yachty. For the mixtape savant, he’s coming off two studio albums (Mr. Davis and El Gato: The Human Glacier) in 2017 and his Metro Boomin-produced project DropTopWop.
“I’ve been really working on the songs,” said Gucci in regards to Evil Genius. “You know, I just don’t put out anything. So I’m trying to make this project one of my best projects ever. I’m really trying to collaborate with the best producers and make sure I give my fans something that they can be like, ‘Ok, Gucci still coming hard. He still passionate about the music.”
After initially promising to drop Glacier Boyz last April, Gucci reneged. According to Guwop, he and the rest of the team are “putting the final touches” on the long-awaited tape. “We got like 15 songs recorded,” he said. “We still just whipping it up again. We’re going back in the lab again and putting the final touches on it. We’re working on it.”
Evil Genius and Glacier Boyz are both expected to drop later this year.
