Though Kendrick Lamar nabbed four Grammys at this year’s festivities, including ones for best rap song and best rap album, when it came down to the night’s biggest honor, he fell short to Bruno Mars.
Mars winning album of the year for 24K Magic — his sixth trophy after also winning song of the year (“That’s What I Like”) and record of the year (“24K Magic”) — caused a heated discussion on Twitter, as avid Lamar fans were enraged by the decision. “Kendrick put out three of the greatest albums of our lifetime, and three times now he has lost the Grammy for Best Album. First to Daft Punk, then to Taylor Swift, and now to Bruno Mars,” said one vexed Twitter user.
“Jay-Z was robbed. Kendrick was robbed. And Childish was robbed. No way 24K Magic was better than all of those albums. #GRAMMYs,” said another.

I hope Kendrick can somehow get over the pain of losing such an historically important, prestigious award bestowed on classic albums like Eric Clapton’s UNPLUGGED, Santana’s SUPERNATURAL, and Tony Bennett’s MTV UNPLUGGED.

i love bruno (filipino & puerto rican brother right there) & the new jack swing influence on #24kmagic had my curls drippin in sweat every time i put it on
but i appreciated jay & kendrick for dropping music w/ emotional depth & sparking pensive debates re: politics & culture

In my perfect world.
Crew wins rap/sung.
Kendrick wins rap song.
Jay wins rap album.
Childish wins best song.
Sza wins best new artist.
Bruno wins record of the year
Kendrick wins album of the year.— SPRINTER VAN DAMN. (@Chuckisdope) January 29, 2018
As Kendrick and Kesha’s respective performances moved us, Bruno couldn’t even be bothered to take off his cool dude sunglasses as a symbolic gesture of respect. He’s a vapid pop guy, deep like a kiddie pool. #grammys

Take this for whatever it’s worth, but Kendrick’s album is art that makes me think and pisses me off. I play Bruno’s album when I need to be silly and dance and mood-adjust from being mad. We’re all mad a lot lately. Maybe that’s why he swept. #Grammys

I’m sure Bruno Mars is a nice man and he’s an amazing performer.
But Kendrick Lamar is the decade’s transcendent musical Artist.
The #Grammy2018 never fail to disappoint and pick the safer choice.
Fuck you #Grammys. You suck me in every year and I always leave pissed off.

No hate on Bruno but…
24K Magic ain’t my album of the year.
24K Magic AIN’T my record of the year.
Everyone knows Kendrick deserves them this time. Such a shame #GRAMMYs— Bank (@banktassapon) January 29, 2018
Kendrick Lamar really is the Leonardo DiCaprio of the music industry. #GRAMMYs

Steely Dan over Eminem
Herbie Hancock over Kanye
Taylor Swift over Kendrick
Adele over Beyoncé
Bruno Mars over KendrickEvery time, the safer choice won over the most critically album. Every time.
