Lizz Wright will make her formal Concord Records debut when Freedom & Surrender is released on Sept. 4. As previously announced, the singer/songwriter’s fifth studio album was produced by Grammy Award winner Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux, Tracy Chapman).
The forthcoming album — available for pre-order on Amazon — marks five years since Wright’s final release on Verve, 2010’s Fellowship.

Wright wrote 10 of the 15 songs comprising Freedom & Surrender, originally envisioned as more of a cover songs album. Klein and Klein’s longtime songwriting partner David Batteau penned six of the project’s tracks with Wright. Those songs include the set’s initial working title, up-tempo country-blues track “The New Game.” Among the additional Freedom & Surrender collaborators: songwriters J.D. Souther, Maia Sharp and frequent Wright creative partners Jesse Harris and Toshi Reagon.

Grammy winner Gregory Porter duets with Wright on one of the Wright/Souther/Klein compositions, the burning love song “Right Where You Are.” Reagon contributed to the album’s bookending songs/title tracks, solely writing “Freedom” and co-writing “Surrender” with Wright. Three covers — “To Love Somebody,” “River Man” and bonus track “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”– round out the offerings.
