Kobalt Music Publishing has signed a worldwide agreement with R&B singer/songwriter Kem. Under the terms of the pact, Kobalt will administer and provide publishing and sync-licensing services for the Grammy Award-nominated artist’s future works. Universal Music Publishing exclusively administers the Detroit-based artist’s back catalog, which includes 2003”s gold-certified Kemistry, platinum-certified Album II (2005), the gold-certified Intimacy: Album III (2010) and latest album Promise to Love (2014).
Joining Sas Metcalfe, president of global creative at Kobalt, in making the announcement, Kobalt’s senior VP of creative Al “Butter” McLean, states, “Kem is a true musician and complete songwriter. We’re looking forward to creatively working with him and opening a Pandora’s box of co-writing opportunities.”
“In this business, everything starts with a song, and I’m a songwriter first,” says Kem, who signed with Motown in 2001. “That’s why I’m thrilled to be joining forces with Kobalt.”
In addition to Kem, Kobalt Music Publishing’s most recent signings include Lionel Richie, Robert Glasper and songwriter/producer Chuck Harmony (Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Ne-Yo), who is one-half of the duo Louis York with songwriter/producer Claude Kelly.
Story updated to note that Universal Music Publishing still administers Kem’s back catalog on Motown.
