Pop songstress Ellie Goulding returned with her new single “Hate Me” featuring Juice Wrld today (June 26).
Serving as Zane Lowe’s World Record on Apple Music’s Beats 1, “Hate Me” finds Goulding taking a darker approach, after watching her relationship spiral. “Erase me, Erase me, wish you never date me,” she sings on the anti-love anthem.
Juice brings his sad-boy persona to the forefront, accusing his ex-lover of “playing mind games” and “damaging his brain.”
“The truth of the matter is that humans are crazy and do fucked up things to people, and that’s the truth,” Goulding told Lowe during their interview. “I realized that I can always try and wear these rose-tinted glasses when it comes to my own past relationships or my friends’ relationships, but actually when it comes down to it some things are just really messed up. Sometimes I think you need to hear that. You need to hear it…to sort of validate your own situation, and it happens a lot. I played it to Juice Wrld, he loved it and wanted to be involved.”
As far as an upcoming album, Goulding is exercising patience and is hoping to deliver something “special” to her devotees.
“I’m always working,” she said. “I’m always in the studio, whether it’s for my album…I have a classical project I’m doing at the moment, as well. I’m always making music. I’m always collaborating, whether it’s with artists or with producers that I’ve been a fan of for a long time. I’m always sending vocals to producers to try and mess around with. I am always writing, but the album is obviously something very special to me, and so I’m trying to make sure that it’s exactly what I want it to be and not just releasing it out of panic or because I need to release something.”
