“Y’all know we had to do a BIG holiday party,” the VerzuzTV Instagram account announced Sunday, one day after Ashanti and Keyshia Cole‘s scheduled battle was postponed to January after Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19.
The Bay Area rapper-producers have been playing on the same West Coast team for years, from dropping their History collab album in 2012 to dropping a surprise double-set titled Ain’t Gone Do It / Terms and Conditions on Friday (Dec. 18), just one day ahead of the battle. Too $hort fronts the first 10 Ain’t Gone Do It tracks, featuring Guapdad 4000, G-Eazy, Rayven Justice and more, while E-40 takes care of business on the back half for Terms and Conditions, featuring Blxst, Brent Faiyaz, Freddie Gibbs and more.
In an interview with The Ringer ahead of their Verzuz, the two explained how their battle was bigger than them. “It’s more like, ‘Let’s do this for the Bay,'” Too $hort said. “As we stand up and pop our collars, that’s the whole Bay popping their collar. Every time we mention another accolade or another hot record plays, or where another eye opens like, ‘Oh man, that’s E-40, that’s Too $hort,’ that’s the Bay. That’s bigger than us.”
Fans can watch the “legends of the Bay” bring the hyphy to their Verzuz battle on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. ET on Verzuz’s Instagram Live or on Apple Music.
