DMX was released from prison on Friday, and the “Party Up” rapper didn’t waste any time hitting the stage over the weekend or giving his first post-prison interview with Big Boy’s Neighborhood. The Los Angeles-based radio show’s Instagram page started teasing snippets from the highly sought-after chat on Tuesday (Jan. 29), which finds X giving his take on the current state of hip-hop, overcoming addiction, keeping his faith through tough times, and much more.
The 48-year-old believes that rap in its current form is being misrepresented by newer acts. “They’re all promoting drug use. If that’s what you wanna do, that’s your business, but you ain’t gotta promote it like it’s cool and make it cool. Kids walk around like, I’m popping molly, I’m popping percs,” he explains to Big Boy.
With that said, X feels that the responsibility to guide the youth falls on the shoulders of the genre’s veterans. “Whoever has the ability to, first, the insight to see it and the talent and the ability to, you know, do the right thing,” the Yonkers native affirmed. “It’s all of our responsibility. Whoever can, not just myself.”
The full interview is yet to be released over on BigBoyTV, but check out the few clips that have surfaced.
