Currently on tour with comedian Dave Chappelle, DJ Trauma is the personification of busy. A Monday through Friday fixture on Atlanta’s urban contemporary radio powerhouse WVEE (V-103 FM), he most recently accompanied Omarion at the Afro Pop Festival in Kenya, DJed Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s baby shower/push party in Los Angeles and appeared at the Fresh Island Festival in Croatia.
Now as DJ Trauma gears up for the release of his EP this fall, he is premiering the video for his single “Take Me High” exclusively on Billboard today. Featuring indie female singer The Dan, the song’s go-with-the-flow vibe doubles as a perfect summer chill track.
Check out the video, directed by Nick Bazinsky (official videographer for Diddy’s Bad Boy Reunion Tour):
“I always knew I had a good record with ‘Take Me High,’ but I also know timing is everything,” DJ Trauma tells Billboard. “At the release party for Dave Chappelle’s Netflix specials in L.A., I dropped my song and watched the star-studded crowd, which included Kendall Jenner and Tyler, the Creator, rocking and bobbing their heads. By the first hook, people were singing along with it. I knew right then I was winning.”
The party also proved fortuitous for another reason. “That same day,” explains DJ Trauma, “one of the execs from Priority Records, who had already heard the song, saw the reaction in the club. The next day they offered me a deal.”
“Take Me High” was co-produced by DJ Trauma and Needlz & Donut. Needlz’s credits include the Bruno Mars multi-platinum smash “Just The Way You Are” and Drake’s “I’m Going In.” Together Needlz & Donut also produced Jeremih’s crossover hit “Oui” (No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally; top 20 on the Hot 100).
