DJ Kay Slay hasn’t released a studio album since 2010’s More Than Just a DJ, and judging by the lineup for his upcoming album The Big Brother, the famed DJ has been busy making up for lost time.
Backed by a phalanx of rhymers from every coast, Kay Slay will deliver his 22-track effort on Sept. 29 and recently teased fans with the track “Wild One” featuring 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, and Kevin Gates. For his new cut, “Cold Summer,” the DJ returned on Tuesday (Aug. 29) with a new cast of all-stars, this time tapping the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, Kevin Gates and Rell.
The anthemic track finds the rappers addressing the reality of street life and learning how to “trust your aim.” Lamar leads the charge on the smooth, slow-burning melody and reflects on the brutal summers he experienced growing up from the “tire marks and gun smoke stories” to young lives being cut short due to violence.
“She said, ‘N—a, I’m hoping’ you make your way out/ Before I make this Mac-11 do it for me’/ I know responsibility weighing down on my shoulders,” he raps. “Summertime always the coldest/ Do you dirty like the projects/ 25, then you are the oldest.”
Miller coasts onthe beat and raps about his work ethic, before warning that “me and Kendrick on a track, man, that’s bad news.” Rell balances out the rappers’ gritty bars and provides the soulful chorus. Gates caps off the track with his own story of being in the “slum” and his strained relationship with his mother.
