“I am not easily impressed,” says Flint, Michigan rapper Dizzy Wright in his latest single “Hit Em With The Pose,” whose music video is premiering exclusively through Billboard today (June 6).
A brief glance at the 27-year-old’s discography will reaffirm this lyric. Coming off the back-to-back releases of State of Mind 2 and The Golden Age 2 over the course of three months in 2017, both albums showcased a rapper who is deeply invested in his movement, and overtly critical of a plethora of issues. Both albums were packed with politically-charged metaphors and self-help guidance, with Wright attacking everything from rappers who don’t write their own songs, (“Fraud”) to falsities in religion, (“You Ain’t Right Within) to America’s corrupt prison systems (Loophole).
That’s why the title of his latest EP Don’t Tell Me It Can’t Be Done perfectly encompasses the point Wright is at in his career. He’s been with us now since early 2012, and has constantly preached for change since that time. Now that he is finally starting to gain the traction he feels he deserves, he seems to use this EP to flex on the haters a bit. “Hit Em With The Pose” is an example of this. It showcases Wright’s versatility as an artist, and his ability to craft dense lyrical content as well as radio-friendly jams.
“Promoting something positive but having fun is always the mission,” Wright told Billboard about the single. The bouncy instrumental, produced by Kato on the Track, features Wright showcasing a more staccato flow over a high hats and quick synths. “Hit ‘em with the pose, drop that, I like that, Yoga bend,” Wright says in the video as he maneuvers through a cloudy, dimly lit gym. Gorgeous women hit some yoga in the back, and Wright and his buddy Jazz Lazr flex in the back as they rhyme. The video, in contrast, is a fairly simple concept compared to Dizzy Wright’s politically charged reputation, and showcases how the rapper can let loose for a while, further reaffirming his talent and why he is deserving of an A-list spot.
