“The more you are consumed by the fire, the more you are reborn anew,” Deva Mahal tells Billboard. “And each time, you emerge stronger than before.” That’s the timeless message behind singer/songwriter Mahal’s “Fire” video, premiering on Billboard today (Apr. 26).
“I can’t go any further,” implores Mahal in “Fire” as she wanders across the video’s desert locale amidst plumes of neon-colored smoke. Directed by cinematographer John Rutland, the video underscores the ballad’s intent, which Mahal has described in publicity materials as a “letter to a past love; a kind of apology.”

Elaborating further, Mahal tells Billboard that there is much strength in being vulnerable. “This experience taught me to walk head first into my emotions,” she continues. “The world would be a better place if we could all be less afraid of our feelings, allow ourselves to connect to them and, in turn, connect to others. John and I found it imperative to be able to visually convey the depth of all that emotion and internal struggle whilst remaining optimistic and hopeful.”
“Fire” is the latest single from singer/songwriter Mahal’s debut album Run Deep, released in March via Motema Music. Produced by Scott Jacoby (José James, Coldplay) with two tracks produced by Jarrett Wetherell (Beyoncé/FKA Twigs), the modern soul set melds R&B, blues, pop, rock and gospel. Deva Mahal (pronounced Diva) comes by her searing vocals and powerful songwriting naturally. She is the daughter of blues icon Taj Mahal, who released his memorable version of “Take a Giant Step” in 1969. Her own star started to rise in 2008 when her co-write with her father, “Never Let You Go,” was appeared on his Grammy Award-nominated album Maestro. Her growing fan club includes Elton John, who is playing her on Beats 1, and Ru Paul.
